The anticipated wait is over, The Little Mermaid is finally here! Premiered on May 26th and we have had the privilege of watching it!
The movie is a great remake of the 1989 Disney Classic. It still featured all our favourite (and not so favourite) characters from Ariel, Prince Eric, Ursula, Flounder and of course Sebastian the Crab! It also features our most loved classic songs including ‘Under The Sea’ and ‘Part of your world.’
One of the major changes in this Little Mermaid is that we get to know Prince Eric a lot more whereas in the original it was more focused on Ariel. He is given a back story, the audience get to know his mother who is definitely a new character. He even had his own song called “I Want”. There are actually three more new songs added , even Scuttle the gannet gets a tune! We also see that Ariel kills Ursula instead of Eric who initially killed Ursula.
At the end of the movie, Ariel and Eric opt for a more low-key wedding as opposed to their grand wedding in the original. As they're on their way to their ship, Triton pops up from the water with other merpeople and lets Ariel know that he’ll always be here for her. In the live action form, Ariel is comforted with the knowledge that this isn’t the end for her and the underwater world but she can actually move onto the human world with the assurance that her father will be there for her no matter what. We love a heartfelt ending and that one almost bought a tear to our eye!
The movie was cast to perfection as Halle Bailey, who plays Ariel and Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Prince Eric perfectly embody their roles making us as grown adults find our inner child all over again. The fact that they are as sweet in the press interviews as the movie makes you believe in the casting even more.
Despite the movie being heavily criticised, it’s hard to see anyone hate this light hearted family friendly film.
The Disney original topped the UK & Ireland box office, making well over £5 million in the first week of it being out. The movie has gained a lot of traction on social media and has raked up amazing reviews from Hollywood’s stars such as Zendaya, Kylie Jenner, Khloe Kardashian, Yara Shahidi and Kamie Crawford to name a few.
This movie is definitely one that will change a lot of things in the movie industry and is definitely one for the history books.
